  • About Me | Claudio Mendes Copy

Claudio Mendes is an accredited counsellor and psychotherapist in Banstead, Surrey. Offering supportive, evidence-based therapy in person and online, including sessions in Portuguese, to help you navigate life’s challenges and strengthen relationships Meet Claudio Mendes I am a psychotherapist and supervisor accredited by BABCP, BACP and IPT UK. Over the past 16 years, I’ve supported adults facing a wide range of emotional, relational and identity-related challenges. My experience spans the NHS, probation, bereavement services, multicultural counselling organisations and mental health charities. My style is calm, transparent and collaborative. In sessions, we explore patterns in thoughts, emotions and relationships, while also developing strategies that help you cope, make decisions and navigate challenges more confidently. I draw on psychoanalytic, interpersonal and cognitive-behavioural approaches, integrating elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) when useful. This allows the work to be reflective, practical and tailored to you. I believe therapy is a powerful creative process that is also thoughtful and focused. Like an alchemical process, two people come together in a real human relationship that allows for uncertainty, difference, and connection. Through exploration and insight, we can develop a clearer understanding of ourselves and make changes from a deep and secure place, rather than relying on a quick or superficial fix. My own experience in therapy is what led me to this work. It showed me the relief that comes from being understood, and the impact of having space to reflect with someone who is consistent and attuned. Away from work, I try to keep my life simple: gardening for wildlife, spending time with friends and furfriends, diving into a cheeky box-set or going to the cinema, often on my own, which is a quiet pleasure for me. These moments help me stay grounded and connected to the world outside the therapy room. Book a Consultation

  • My Approach To Therapy | Claudio Mendes

Discover Claudio Mendes’ therapeutic approach, drawing on psychoanalytic, interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioural models. Learn how therapy can help you gain insight, manage challenges, and achieve meaningful personal growth My Approach to Therapy There isn’t one fixed way I work. Therapy isn’t about applying a formula, it is about responding to you. I draw on different therapeutic approaches and use what best fits your goals, your difficulties and how you think and relate to others. Some sessions are more reflective, helping us to understand patterns that have been with you for a long time. Others are more focused on developing strategies that might help you cope or make changes in the here and now. Most of the time, it is a mixture of both. Making Sense of Patterns and Relationships (Psychodynamic & Interpersonal Therapy) We pay attention to emotional patterns and relationship experiences, past and in the here and now, that shape how you respond, cope, and connect with others today. This can help make sense of recurring struggles, stuck feelings, or reactions that feel familiar but hard to shift. Understanding these patterns often brings relief and opens up new choices. Using Strategies & Tools for When Things Feel Overwhelming (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - CBT) At times, it can be helpful to work more directly with thoughts, emotions, and behaviours triggered or maintained by ongoing events. CBT offers structure and focused tools that can reduce feeling anxious, low in mood, overwhelm, increase clarity which can be helpful to feel more balanced when life feels demanding. Focusing on Relationships and Life Changes (Interpersonal Psychotherapy- IPT) IPT looks closely at how relationships, communication, and life transitions affect mood and wellbeing. This approach can be especially useful when difficulties are linked to conflict, loss, role changes, or feeling disconnected from others. The aim is to strengthen communication, confidence, and emotional support. Creating Emotional Flexibility and Self-Compassion (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy & Compassion-Focused Therapy) When helpful, we may include elements of ACT or Compassion-Focused Therapy. These approaches can support emotional resilience, reduce harsh self-criticism and may support and encourage you to relate differently to difficult thoughts and feelings without having to fight or suppress them. Do I Need to Know Which Therapy I Want? No. You don’t need to arrive with a clear idea of the “right” therapy. We’ll work it out together, based on what you want to change, what feels most difficult right now, and what supports your way of working best. The approach can shift over time as your needs change. What Therapy With Me Feels Like Sessions are steady, thoughtful, and grounded. I offer guidance without taking over, and reflection without losing sight of real-life change. You can expect: • space to explore what feels difficult • help connecting past and present patterns • strategies you can use between sessions • a clear sense of direction and progress Whether your challenges feel recent or long-standing, the aim is to help you understand yourself more deeply and move through life with greater clarity, confidence, and choice. • My Approach | Claudio Mendes

Discover Claudio Mendes’ therapeutic approach, drawing on psychoanalytic, interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioural models. Learn how therapy can help you gain insight, manage challenges, and achieve meaningful personal growth My Approach How I Work My work is collaborative, structured, and responsive to your needs. Therapy provides a space to explore current difficulties while also understanding the emotional and relational patterns that shape how you think, feel, and relate to others. We work at a pace that feels safe and containing, with attention to both your lived experience and clear therapeutic goals. I aim to offer a balance of reflection and practical support, helping you develop insight alongside strategies that can be applied in day-to-day life. View My Services Therapeutic Focus My approach is informed by evidence-based practice and guided by ongoing formulation. Together, we explore how past experiences, attachment patterns, and relational dynamics influence present difficulties, particularly in relation to mood, anxiety, self-esteem, and relationships. This relational understanding supports greater emotional awareness, flexibility, and choice. Alongside this, we work actively with skills that support emotional regulation, tolerance of uncertainty, and adaptive coping. This may include strategies drawn from cognitive and behavioural approaches where appropriate. The aim is not symptom management alone, but meaningful and sustainable change — supporting improved functioning, emotional resilience, and a stronger sense of self over time. Therapeutic Models I Use I draw on different approaches depending on your goals, presentation, and stage of therapy: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) To help understand and work with unhelpful thought patterns, emotional responses, and behavioural cycles, particularly in anxiety and mood difficulties. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) To focus on relationships, communication, role transitions, and unresolved interpersonal experiences that impact emotional wellbeing. Psychodynamic / Relational Therapy To explore deeper emotional themes, long-standing patterns, and the relational dynamics that emerge both in life and within therapy. ACT and Compassion-Focused Therapy (when helpful) To support emotional flexibility, self-compassion, and values-based choices, particularly where self-criticism or avoidance are prominent. Contact Me What Therapy Focuses On Therapy is not only about managing symptoms, but about understanding the patterns that sit beneath them. We pay attention to how past experiences shape present responses, particularly in relationships, emotional regulation, and sense of self. This understanding helps loosen stuck patterns and creates more choice in how you respond to difficulties. Alongside insight, we work practically. This may include developing strategies to manage anxiety, navigate change, tolerate uncertainty, and respond more flexibly to emotional challenges in everyday life. The aim is not quick fixes, but change that feels meaningful, stable, and sustainable over time

  • Exploring Longstanding Relational Patterns | Claudio Mendes Counselling and Psychotherapy

"Explore and understand longstanding relational patterns with personalized therapy. Uncover the origins of emotional disconnection, early life influences, and ingrained beliefs to create healthier connections and break negative cycle Exploring Longstanding Relational Patterns and Their Origins I specialize in helping individuals explore and understand longstanding relational patterns that may have been shaping their interactions and connections for years. These patterns often develop unconsciously and are influenced by early life experiences, past relationships, and deeply ingrained beliefs. Over time, they can become automatic responses, creating cycles of misunderstanding or emotional disconnection. By guiding clients through this process of self-exploration, I help them identify the underlying causes of these patterns, whether they stem from childhood dynamics, unresolved trauma, or learned behaviours. This awareness is the first step toward meaningful change, allowing clients to recognize the unconscious drivers of their actions and reactions in relationships. Through our work together, clients learn to challenge and reframe these patterns, develop healthier communication strategies, and adopt more secure and adaptive attachment styles. By integrating techniques from both psychodynamic and behavioural therapies, we can address both the root causes and the surface-level expressions of these relational issues. This deeper understanding enables clients to break free from repetitive cycles of conflict, emotional disconnection, or unhealthy attachment patterns, such as anxious or avoidant behaviours. We work toward replacing these with more balanced, secure ways of relating to others. Ultimately, my goal is to empower individuals to create more authentic, fulfilling relationships by transforming their relational habits. By fostering self-awareness, emotional regulation, and conscious communication, clients can build stronger, more connected relationships with themselves and those around them

  • Anxiety Difficulties Therapy | Claudio Mendes Counselling, Banstead UK

Specializing in anxiety, I help clients manage self-doubt, decision-making struggles, and unhealthy relational patterns. Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Psychodynamic Counselling, we'll tailor a personalized approach to address the root causes of your anxiety and build healthier coping strategies Overcome Anxiety with Expert Counselling and Psychotherapy In recent years, I have developed specialized expertise in helping clients manage and overcome anxiety. This includes addressing challenges such as self-doubt, difficulties in decision-making, and unhealthy relational patterns that may be holding them back. In our work together, we will use either Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic counselling, depending on your goals and how anxiety manifests itself in your life. If your anxiety is driven by specific thought patterns or behaviours, we may focus on CBT techniques, which help identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and develop healthier coping strategies. This approach is particularly effective in reducing excessive worry and increasing self-confidence. Alternatively, if your anxiety stems from deeper emotional or unconscious issues, Psychodynamic Counselling may be a better fit. This approach explores past experiences, unresolved relational patterns, and childhood influences, aiming to uncover the root causes of your anxiety. By gaining greater self-awareness, you can work through internal conflicts and develop more adaptive ways of responding to anxiety in the present. A key part of our process is improving anxiety-related patterns in relationships, addressing self-doubt, and overcoming self-criticism. We’ll tailor our approach to help you understand and shift the patterns that contribute to your anxiety, whether through practical CBT strategies or deeper psychodynamic exploration. Together, we’ll also explore the deeper roots of anxiety, including traumatic experiences, neglect in relationships, shame, and limiting beliefs that may contribute to ongoing struggles. By integrating insights from both therapeutic modalities, we create a holistic approach to managing anxiety and fostering lasting change
